IntroductionThe Bryant University web policy and guidelines define the roles and obligations of the University, departments, and individuals in formulating and presenting materials on the Bryant Web site. II. Statement of PurposeThe purpose of the Bryant Web site, located at www.bryant.edu, is to provide information about the university, its mission and services, its faculty and students, and its events and programs to internal and external constituents. In accordance with its mission, Bryant supports the use of the Web by its students, faculty, and staff, in their roles as information publishers and consumers. The goal of this policy is to establish a minimum level of presentation which respects the university's need to brand the institution, and provides a consistency in navigation, look, and feel within the Web site. III. DefinitionsBryant Web Server Bryant University maintains a network server through which the Bryant community may access the internet. This server is the property of the university and is under the control of Information Technology. The Bryant Intranet is published to this server. Bryant Web Site The Bryant University Web site, home page and associated upper-level pages, are an official publication of Bryant University. Unless otherwise indicated, all text and photographs appearing on the Homepage or subsequent official pages linked to it are copyrighted and should not be reproduced without written permission from the Office of University Relations. Official Bryant University Web pages are identified as published on the domain named www.bryant.edu. The Bryant University home page and associated upper-level pages are maintained by the university Web Producer under the direction of the Office of University Relations in accordance with the policies and procedures developed by the Web Site Development Committee (WDC). The Web Producer is responsible for ensuring that all posted material conforms to the WDC policy and guidelines. Bryant Intranet The university believes it is appropriate to provide a resource that facilitates the dissemination of information that is not generated by the marketing and administrative areas of the university. The campus Web site will make it possible for members of the campus community to publish Web pages that are accessible to individuals using computers located off-campus. The fully-qualified domain name for this server is http://web.bryant.edu/. Pages published to this domain are not official publications of Bryant University. This site will include self-published Web pages created by academic and staff departments, student organizations, business centers, individual faculty members, and individual students. The community members who choose to exercise this privilege will be responsible for constructing and posting their pages directly to the campus Web site server. The official Bryant University Web site will include links to the campus Web site. The search features of the Bryant University Web Site will be programmed to include pages from the campus Web site in response to queries. Pages posted to the campus Web site will not be subject to editorial review before they are published. Any pages posted to either the Bryant University Web Site or the campus Web site will be subject to auditing by the Web Producer, following WDC guidelines. The Web Producer reserves the right to notify the proper authority regarding violations of university policy. Individually published pages may not use the Bryant University logo without permission from the Web Producer or the Office of University Relations. The use of any such images implying endorsement of the page by Bryant University is outlined in the Style Guide section of this document. Web site A Web site consists of a page or group of pages organized to represent an individual, group, or department and is published electronically on either the internet or Bryant's Intranet Web site owner The Web site owner is the individual or group for whom the web site was created. This may be an individual, student group, faculty member, department, etc.; in the case of intranet sites, the owner will be determined by the path (URL) used for publication. The Web site owner is ultimately responsible for any items published to their reserved web space. Information Provider Web site owners may elect to have one with more technical knowledge create web pages and post information to the server. This information provider is responsible to either publish to the Bryant Intranet for the Web site owner, or to submit information to the Web Producer for publication on Bryant's Official Web site. Before a Web page is approved for linking to the Bryant Web site, the group represented must select an individual contact who will be responsible for maintaining the group's Web page information. Information providers, as designated by the group, are responsible for creating and maintaining Web page information, and updating Web site information as necessary. Home page A home page is the first page viewed when one connects to a web site. The home pages for all individuals, groups and departments should contain the name of the web site owner, information provider, an e-mail contact, and the date the site was last updated. IV. Legal and Policy RequirementsResponsibilities of Web Page Owners Information published on the Bryant Web site may not be used in any manner prohibited by law or disallowed by licenses, contracts, copyrights, copyrighted material or university regulations. Groups or individuals are responsible for information they publish; they should be aware of university policies pertaining to confidentiality and the use of computers, particularly those approved by the computer use policy. The individual contact person for the group is expected to read and adhere to these guidelines. Any individual or group found to be in violation of these guidelines may be denied access to university computing resources and shall be subject to reprimand, suspension, dismissal, criminal liability, or other disciplinary action. Campus Web pages may link to non-Bryant sites only when the links do not imply University endorsement of the product, publication, process, service, or offering and when the purpose of the link is consistent with the university's mission. Use of the Bryant University Logo Use of the Bryant University logo is restricted to the Office of University Relations for the specific purpose of identifying officially reviewed institutional pages. Community web pages wishing to display the logo must request permission to display the logo by contacting the Office of University Relations at webpro@bryant.edu. These requests will be reviewed to ensure the page meets university standards for accuracy, editorial content, style, and design. No site may use the Bryant University logo, Bryant University Seal, or other such image as to indicate endorsement of that site by the university without the express consent of the Web Producer or the Office of University Relations. Copyright Notice All textual, graphical, photographic and other content appearing on the Bryant University Web Site are the property of the Board of Trustees of Bryant University. Bryant University sites contain copyrighted material, trademarks and other proprietary information that may include text, photos, videos, graphics, music, sound, and software, and the entire contents of the Bryant University sites are copyrighted as a collective work under the United States Copyright Laws. In some cases a third party content provider may own copyrights in the materials original to it. You may view, copy, print and use content contained on this Web site solely for your own personal use and provided that: (1) the content available from this Web site is used for informational and noncommercial purposes only; (2) no text, graphics, photos or other content available from this Web site is modified in any way; and (3) no graphics or photos available from this Web site are used, copied or distributed separate from accompanying text. Except as otherwise expressly permitted under copyright law you may not copy, redistribute, publish, display or commercially exploit any material from the Bryant University sites without the expressed permission of the Office of University Relations and the copyright owner. Commercial Use Commercial Use of the Bryant Web site is permitted only for business conducted on behalf of the university. Other for-profit uses are prohibited. Not-for-profit activities may be conducted on the Bryant Web site only under the supervision of officially recognized campus organizations or academic programs with approval of the Web Producer. Policy Revisions The Office of University Relations reserves the right to amend this policy as needed. These revisions will be in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the Web Site Development Committee, and will be published in the Office of University Relations. ContentThe first priority of the Bryant University Web site is to communicate with external constituents. External constituents include prospective students and their parents, parents of current students, alumni, the business community, and prospective donors. The Bryant University Web site is the most significant vehicle the university has for delivering our message. The impression our visitors receive must reflect the high standards of excellence that Bryant University strives to achieve in academics, scholarship, and service to the community. The following characteristics will be present in the official Bryant University Web site: 1. User's perspective is the highest priority 2. Site information is: 3. The objective of the Bryant University Web site is to: Information placed on the Bryant University Web site plays an important role in developing and maintaining the strong reputation and image of the institution. All electronic information on the Bryant University Web site must reflect the mission, interest and standards of the Bryant University community, and must also comply with local, state, and federal laws including, but not limited to, copyright, libel, and indecency statutes. The information that is published on the Web site will be accurate, timely, and presented in a manner that is consistent with the university's marketing initiatives. * Departmental Web sites University departments are encouraged to publish web site on the Bryant Intranet to provide the Bryant community with the most up-to-date information relating to that department. These pages may be linked from the Official Bryant University Web site only after review of the Web Producer. * Personal Websites Individual members of the Bryant community are permitted access to publish to the Bryant Intranet. These publications are subject to this policy as well as the Computer Use Policy published by Information Technology. * Bryant University Web Site Events Calendar The Bryant University Events Calendar allows the Bryant University Web site user to access up-to-the- minute information about events affecting the Bryant University community. Events such as athletics, organizational meetings, administrative notices, student activities, and construction updates will be published dynamically to the www.bryant.edu Web site as soon as the information has been entered into the calendar. Since the information posted to this calendar is readily accessible to all visitors of the home page this information may be entered into the calendar by submitting relevant information to the Web Producer at webpro@bryant.edu. All calendar content is subject to review by the Web Producer. The format of such submissions must include: Name of the Event VI. Style GuideThe Web Producer will maintain a style guide in conformity with WDC guidelines. This Style Guide outlines the acceptable presentation of all pages which will be linked from the Official Bryant University Site. These pages include those published by the various administrative departments of the university. |
