Leadership
Running a fraternity or sorority is in some ways like running a business. Fraternities and sororities not only provide training in the principals of leadership, but they give a student the hands-on experience in which these principles may be put into practice. The Bryant community looks to the Greek system to provide top leaders as well as strong alumni.
Scholarship
The focus for a college student should be education. Bryant's fraternities and sororities realize this and therefore require a certain grade point average to be eligible for membership to any Greek organization on campus. Awards are given annually to the fraternity and sorority with the highest GPA, as well as to the new member classes with the highest GPA's. All Greek students are also eligible to win one of two Greek Life scholarships awarded annually. Each spring one Greek man and one Greek woman are awarded $400 for having the highest combined GPA for the previous spring and fall semesters. The new member, man and woman, with the highest GPA are awarded $100. Bryant Greeks are eligible to become members of The Order of Omega, a Greek National Honor Society.
Community Service
Each fraternity and sorority on campus is affiliated with a nonprofit organization. The chance to get involved in the community and make a difference is often one of the most satisfying experiences of a college career. Greek students not only do philanthropic and community service based projects for their own organizations, but they also have the opportunity to help with projects that are sponsored through the Interfraternity and Panhellenic Councils.
Recruitment
The Bryant University Greek System uses a Deferred Recruitment system. What this means is that no first -year student can pledge or accept a bid from a fraternity or sorority in their first semester on campus. They can attend attend official Greek Life sponsored events, but must wait until their second semester, or further along in their Bryant career, to be able to pledge a Greek organization.
By going through recruitment, you are not committing yourself to join a fraternity or sorority. You are simply meeting people, making new friends, and becoming familiar with the Greek organizations.
Open Houses will be offered twice during the fall semester to educate students about the recruitment process and answer any questions. Greek Life will also be sponsoring an array of campus wide events and encourage all students to attend and have fun.
All women must sign up in advance to go through the second semester All Sorority Formal Recruitment process. All Sorority Formal Recruitment allows women to meet all of the chapters through a series of recruitment events organized by the Panhellenic Vice President for Recruitment.
Men do not have to sign up to go through the recruitment process. The Interfraternity Council will have some All Fraternity Recruitment events, but for the most part chapters develop their own schedules.
New Member Education
New Member Education (NME) is a series of four workshops/lectures that are offered to the new members of each fraternity and sorority. This mandatory series runs each fall semester and during the spring semester if at least one of the Greek organizations is taking in a new class. Typical topics cover hazing, alcohol awareness, gambling addiction, safe sex & sex education, and how to become more involved in Greek Life. It also gives each new member class the opportunity to meet the other classes.
The Order of Omega
The Order of Omega is a Greek National Honor Society. This national honor society recognizes students who have attained a high standard of leadership in inter-Greek activities while maintaining high academic excellence. Only 15 members of the Greek community are selected to be members of The Order of Omega. Students may apply to be members during the open application process in the fall and spring semesters. The average cumulative GPA for members is a 3.4.
GAMMA
GAMMA is Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol. GAMMA provides several activities throughout the year that give students an alternative to drinking. Five students serve as Executive Board officers and two members from each chapter serve as the general membership for this group.
The organization meets bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. in Bryant Center South.
