Bryant students hone their skills at regional sales competition

Bryant students honed their professional selling skills at the fourth annual Northeast Intercollegiate Sales Competition (NISC).

More than 180 students from 16 schools as far away as Kansas and Florida competed for cash prizes during the tournament-style competition hosted at Bryant in November.

"I think these students have the tools to excel in sales-related jobs."

The competitors participated in skill-building sessions designed to prepare them for careers in professional selling. During elevator pitch competitions, students worked to convince a professional sales recruiter, manager, or vice president from one of the participating companies that they were the best person for the job. Students also received one-on-one feedback and coaching, participated in leadership-building sessions, and networked with potential employers.

Research shows that "the career path students take when they graduate will be sales related," said Assistant Professor of Marketing Stefanie Boyer, Ph.D., the competition’s director. "Sales jobs today are about building relationships and adding value for clients. I think these students have the tools to excel in sales-related jobs because of their drive to win and their strong work ethic.”

Karl Sery ’16 won first place for best individual sales,  and Bryant was runner-up for best overall sales team.

“I am very pleased with the dedication and hard work of these students," Boyer said. "The companies were impressed with the caliber of the competitors.”

In addition to Sery, four Bryant students, all members of the Class of 2016, advanced to the third round of the competition: Sydney Logan, Dylan Paiva, Jenna Visgatis and Ronald Wagner. The event’s elevator pitch competition was won by Jordan Bass ’16 and Michaela Bovenzi ’17.

Since its founding, the competition has become a signature program at Bryant, providing an edge for students entering the job market and giving companies access to talented interns and new hires.  It is supported by a number of companies, including lead sponsor Acquia, which provides cloud-based digital platforms for colleges of all sizes as well as major corporate entities.
