Immigration and citizenship are topics for 6th annual African Studies Workshop

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Creating a sustainable and effective way for African immigrants to integrate into American society is the topic of the sixth annual African Studies Workshop Saturday, Oct. 27.

The event is free and open to the public. It begins at 1:30 at St. Paul’s Church, 445 Elmwood Ave., Providence.  Reporters are welcomed to cover the event.

Newly arrived African immigrants to the United States face a host of hurdles. Principal among them are language difficulties and limited support systems. Kenyan-born educator Wanjiru Kamau, Ph.D., understood those hurdles and took action. In 2000, she established the African Immigrant and Refugee Foundation to facilitate the transition. Kamau is the workshop’s featured speaker. During her talk, she will share her extensive knowledge and experience working with immigrants in the United States.

A bio for Kamau is available online.
