Cinthia Ulloa ’14: The math behind the marketing

Major: Marketing
Minor: Entrepreneurship/Legal Studies
Hometown: Nashua, NH
Path: Two-year claims specialist rotational program, Liberty Mutual Insurance

“When I decided to major in marketing, I had no idea that there would such intense mathematical analysis. But the sleepless nights were 100 percent worth it; I am better prepared than most of my peers to work with numbers – something that a lot of people run away from,” says Ulloa.

"I am better prepared than most of my peers to work with numbers – something that a lot of people run away from."

Last summer, Ulloa leveraged those analysis skills on behalf of Liberty Mutual Insurance. As an intern, she studied the surcharging process of the State of Massachusetts and made suggestions “that will help the company save millions of dollars that were being lost when policyholders were incorrectly charged.”

Impressed with her performance, Liberty extended Ulloa a job offer offer with its two-year claims specialist rotational program. She began the job shortly after graduating.

“At Bryant, I learned the essential communication skills many employers look for and that a surprisingly small number of people actually have.”

Outside of the classroom, Ulloa also found her niche, as president of the Multicultural Student Union. “My favorite experience in this role has been looking into the future of the organization and making essential changes to help ensure that future.

“I am part of a community, devoted to learning about different cultures and sharing them with others,” she says of the MSU, which hosts educational activities for Latino Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Asian Pacific Islander American Heritage Month.

Ulloa is grateful for the Berta Hysell and Friends Multicultural Scholarship she received at Bryant, describing the award as “a motivation to push myself to do better every day.”
