Bryant to award 754 degrees as part of 145th Commencement ceremony on May 17
The day’s highlights include a keynote address by President George H.W. Bush and the unveiling of plans for the first replica of a Forbidden City building outside of China.
Bryant will hold Commencement exercises for 754 members of the Class of 2008 on Saturday, May 15, in the Main Tent adjacent to the Bryant Center. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m., and guests are asked to be seated by 9:30 a.m. The ceremony will also be broadcast on the web at Commencement 2008.
Prior to Commencement, President George H.W. Bush, Chinese entrepreneur Fan Jianchuan, and Bryant University President Ronald K. Machtley will unveil a scale model of the Forbidden City’s Shu Fang Zhai building. The structure will be constructed in China and disassembled for shipment to Bryant, where it will be rebuilt. This is the first time the Chinese government has approved the replication of a Forbidden City building outside of mainland China.
Guests in the tent can view the unveiling on closed-circuit television.
During the undergraduate ceremony, President Bush will give the keynote address and receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Mr. Fan will receive an Honorary Doctor of Business Administration and Roxanne Spillet, president and CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters.

Academic Honors
Special recognition is accorded those who show distinction in academic achievement. Honors may be awarded on the basis of cumulative averages, as follows:
Cum Laude: (with honors – GPA of 3.30)
Magna Cum Laude: (with high honors – GPA of 3.55)
Summa Cum Laude: (with highest honors – GPA of 3.80).
Students must have completed sixty (60) semester hours of course work at Bryant University to be eligible for honors.
Honor Societies
Δ Alpha Kappa Delta: Founded in 1920, Alpha Kappa Delta is an international sociology honor society. It promotes scholarly excellence in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and social and intellectual activities that lead to improvement of the human condition. To be eligible for membership, students must have at least junior-year standing, an overall GPA and a sociology GPA of at least 3.0, be in the top 35 percent of their class, and have completed a minimum of four courses in sociology.
ß Beta Gamma Sigma: Beta Gamma Sigma is the highest national recognition a student can receive in an undergraduate program in a business or management program accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. To be eligible for membership, a student must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 and rank in the upper 10 percent of the second-semester junior class, upper 10 percent of the senior class, or top 20 percent of the graduating master’s class
ø Omicron Delta Epsilon: Founded in 1915, Omicron Delta Epsilon is one of the world’s largest international academic honor societies. There has been a chapter at Bryant University since 1969, and it is dedicated to the encouragement of excellence in economics. To be eligible for membership, a student must have completed a minimum of 12 semester hours of economics courses, have earned at least a “B” average in the economics courses, and have an overall scholastic average of “B” or better.
Δ Lambda Pi Eta: Lambda Pi Eta is an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies. It is the official communication studies honor society of the National Communication Association. To be eligible for membership, students must have completed at least 12 hours of communication courses, have a grade point average of at least 3.25, and be in the upper 35 percent of the graduating class.
hp Honors Program: The Bryant University Honors Program offers its members a personalized, distinct experience that enriches their academic, social, cultural, and professional talents in a mentor-oriented environment. To be recognized as an Honors Program graduate, each member must have successfully completed a minimum of seven honors courses in addition to a capstone senior honors project.
Degree Information
The 2008 Bryant University Commencement honors certified graduates and degree candidates who are scheduled to complete course work by July 31, 2008. Honors are tentatively calculated as of the completion of the 2007 fall semester.
