Bryant University. The Character of Success

My Story

Shared by Anonymous

An energetic, outgoing seventeen year old is about to start her new job as a telemarketer. Little did she know that within three months her sales numbers would be so high that she would be promoted to senior telemarketer. You can just imagine her excitement when she was given the news by her manager. Unfortunately, that excitement didn't last very long. Once the announcement of her promotion was made, everyone in her team started talking behind her back. Comments such as "she's probably sleeping with Doug" or "how can someone so young be promoted over us older more experienced employees" were being said. She didn't really mind those comments because she knew that she earned her promotion based on the quality of her work, her bi-lingual skills and most importantly her sales numbers (which didn't even come close to any of the older employees).

The comment that hurt the most, and she needed to be very diplomatic about dealing with, was the one made by the oldest member of her team Tim - "Why in the world would they promote an immigrant? Who knows if she's even here legally?"

When she heard that, all she could do was just breathe slowly and try to keep her cool. The last thing she wanted was to start her new position with a confrontation over her legal status. She needed time to decide how to handle the situation without being confrontational. She decided to just let it go for a few days until she found a perfect opportunity to talk to Tim.
