Bryant student to take part in Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars forum

Jeff Steacie ’10 will learn about Liberty Mutual’s commitment to the community and network with fellow student leaders.

On Tuesday, Jeff Steacie ’10 (Bellingham, MA) will be part of a group of 30 college students to take part in Liberty Mutual’s Responsible Scholars Student Leader Forum. The one-day event, the first sponsored by Liberty Mutual, will bring together student leaders from 10 regional colleges and universities to network and discuss leadership roles and responsibilities and learn more about Liberty Mutual’s commitment to making a difference in the community. (Learn more about Liberty Mutual Responsible Scholars.)

The event is part of a Liberty Mutual program that challenges students to demonstrate what it means to be responsible. Each year, the company awards five $10,000 scholarships to students with excellent academic achievements who have initiated a service or volunteer program that has a widespread impact on their college campus. Liberty Mutual’s dedication is further illustrated by the thousands of employees who volunteer their time and talents to goodwill initiatives.

As part of the program, Steacie will participate in leadership workshops, and learn about Liberty Mutual’s employee development curriculum. Participants will also discuss how campus leadership translates to work success, and they will network with fellow student leaders.

“There is a lot to learn from meeting other students and sharing our views on leadership,” says Steacie, a finance concentrator.

Learning opportunity

As treasurer of Bryant’s chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SFIE), Steacie learned about the program from Management Lecturer and SIFE advisor Dave Greenan. (Learn more about Bryant SIFE.)

“These out-of-classroom experiences are very important in the learning process,” says Steacie. “Taking advantage of these events helps develop well-rounded individuals and allows us to see what opportunities many companies have to offer.”

Steacie has been a member of SIFE since his first semester at Bryant when he was part of a team that visited elementary schools to teach students about creating a business. As a sophomore, he led a project called “Credit Craze” to educate Bryant students about the importance of maintaining good credit. He also was also part of the Bryant team that won the SIFE Regional competition and was named one of the top chapters in the country. At the beginning of this year, Steacie began his duties as treasurer.

“SIFE has granted me many opportunities to showcase my skills and think outside the box,” he says. “With each project, you can make whatever, you want of it – the opportunities are endless.”
