Champion of child welfare

Associate Professor of Sociology recognized for her commitment to Rhode Island nonprofit.

Sociology Associate Professor Sandra Enos, was recently honored with the “Michelle Norris Award,” a prestigious community award from Children’s Friend and Service. She was recognized for her service to the organization and on behalf of Rhode Island’s children. Past winners have included Rhode Island Congressman Patrick Kennedy, Family Court Chief Judge Jeremiah Jeremiah Jr., and former Governor Lincoln Almond.

In preparation for the 175th anniversary of Children’s Friend, Enos spent several years researching child welfare in Rhode Island and completed a written history titled, “A Rich Blessing to the Community: A History of Children’s Friend and Service.” Her work formed the basis for a historical documentary, as well as a traveling photo and archive exhibit, which will be showcased this fall as part of five-part lecture series. A portion of Enos’ research was also featured in the “Patron of the Past” column of the June issue of Philanthropist Journal Rhode Island and on WRNI, Rhode Island’s PBS radio affiliate.

“About seven years ago, I fell in love with the history of Children’s Friend, as well as the women and men who so beautifully and compellingly made the case that poor children deserved better lives,” says Enos. “I am more than honored to be part of the work you do and to stand with you to represent the best part of our human selves – the ability, talent, and commitment to care for children with the greatest needs.”

The Michelle Norris Award is given each year by Children’s Friend to an individual or organization that has provided extraordinary support and assistance toward the agency’s mission of improving the lives of Rhode Island’s most vulnerable children. The award is given in memory of Michelle Norris, a Central Falls first grader, who was abducted and murdered 21 years ago. Michelle’s mother, Julia Norris, was on hand to co-present the award to Enos.
