For Prof. John Dietrich, mentoring is in his blood

Veteran history and social sciences professor gives the extra effort to create a supportive environment for his colleagues.

For History and Social Sciences Associate Professor John Dietrich, work doesn’t end when he steps out of the classroom. In addition to advising students during office hours or sharing his latest research, the veteran faculty member carves out time to interact with his colleagues – especially new professors.

“As the son of a college professor and a teacher, perhaps it's in my blood to see supporting colleagues as a natural part of developing a top educational institution,” says Dietrich, who was recently recognized by Academic Affairs as Mentor of the Year.

In addition to his responsibilities as coordinator of the political science program, Dietrich stepped in as interim chair of History and Social Sciences Department during the fall semester, when Professor Gregg Carter was on sabbatical.

As one nominator wrote, “Not only did John keep a very large and complex ship afloat, he personally offered his time and attention to every member of the department.”

A supportive network

After earning his M.A. and Ph.D. at Johns Hopkins University, Dietrich came to Bryant in 1997 as an adjunct professor. He became an assistant professor in 2001 and was promoted to associate professor in 2008.

Beyond his responsibilities of overseeing adjunct professors, leading new hiring efforts, and conducting periodic class visits, he makes it a point to be accessible.

“When people have questions, they can come talk them through,” he says. “Sometimes it is a question about teaching ideas or research, but often it is about understanding the Bryant community.”

It is clear that his passion to help has made a positive influence. “John has been my mentor since my first day on campus,” wrote one nominator. “Whenever I have a question, he is there. Whenever I have a problem, he is there. Whenever I have a success to share – he is there. I can’t understate what an important role John has played in making Bryant feel like my home.”
