Fine Arts/Visual StudiesAn Interest Area In our everyday lives we are surrounded by a wide range of visual images in forms as varied as photography, computer graphics, film and television, paintings, architecture, billboards, newspapers, and magazines. A deeper understanding of these visual representations is necessary in order to decipher and produce images that reflect our experiences and connect us across cultures, geographies, and time. The Fine Arts/Visual Studies interest area offers students the opportunity to explore different types of images and their cultural meanings. Students may take one or all of the courses in this area of study. These courses may be applied to your degree requirements or taken as electives. Studying Fine Arts/Visual Studies at BryantThe Fine Arts/Visual Studies interest area equips students with the knowledge and skills to enhance their visual literacy. Courses in Visual Studies bring together the disciplines of cultural studies, media studies, popular material culture, the histories of art and photography, and film theory. Images are never passive; they do much more than just reflect the perspective of their creator. In contemporary culture, visual images are powerful tools that actively construct meanings of identity, place, and power. At Bryant, students are asked to think both historically and thematically through the lens of multiple disciplines about the cultural meaning of visual images.
