Media Production/
Broadcast Media
An Interest Area
What is media production? Is it filmmaking? Broadcasting? Webcasting? It is all of the above, and more. In today’s blended media environment, the medium is less important than the message and the communication skills of the messenger. If you are interested in creating media, it means you have an urge to communicate to an audience larger than your own circle of friends and family.
The Media Production/Broadcast Media interest area is designed to prepare students who want to focus on the creation of content for a blended media environment, either directly as producers, writers, directors, and editors, or indirectly as advertisers, marketers, and public relations professionals. Students can take one or all of the courses in this interest area. These courses may be applied to your degree requirements or taken as electives.
Studying Media Production/Broadcast Media at Bryant University
The state-of-the-art Communications Complex, which includes a digital television and editing studio, allows every production course at Bryant to be hands-on from start to finish. Students work individually and in groups to understand and practice multi-camera studio production and single camera production. Students learn to edit their work on the industry standard Avid system.
Developing the technical skills to operate cameras, switchers, and editing software is only the starting point of being a media producer. Students learn to use a camera so they can study how to communicate with a camera and learn the visual language of camera technique. They learn to edit so they can learn the visual language of editing. Regardless of the field students enter after graduation, an understanding of these “languages of technique” will prepare you to effectively interact and communicate with media producers.
Students in the Media Production/Broadcast Media interest area may choose from a variety of more specialized topics such as narrative filmmaking, electronic journalism, and live, multi-camera sports broadcasting. Hands-on training in global media production is also available, allowing students to create programs for foreign audiences and broadcast them overseas.
