Bryant University. The Character of Success

Literary and Cultural Studies

A Major, Concentration, and Minor

What is a cultural product?  It is everything from poetry to popular music to performance art and it reflects and shapes who we are as human beings.  The power to express ourselves through cultural products gives us new opportunities to connect, and reconnect, with each other across geographic, ethnic, gender, and social divides.

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Literary and Cultural Studies includes 10 courses that offer students the opportunity to hone interpretive skills as they study a wide range texts and practices:  literature, the visual arts, performance, music, philosophy, religion, popular culture, cross-cultural exchange, and more.

The Literary and Cultural studies concentration requires six courses that emphasize the study of literature in its many forms. Students must have a primary concentration in the College of Business or a major in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Literary and Cultural Studies minor is available to all students. Four courses are required for the minor which fosters and sustains a cultural background based upon the mastery of those literary and cultural texts.

Studying Literary and Cultural Studies at Bryant

Cultural practices throughout the world include performance, literature, art, dance, and music.  Students who study Literary and Cultural Studies learn about these cultural practices and engage in creative expression through language, performance studies, creative writing, and other forms. Students develop creative skills as they learn to see themselves as agents whose actions shape the world they live in.

The Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Literary and Cultural Studies develops the skills to interpret and analyze cultural products, both our own and those of less familiar cultures. This ability can help us understand the conflicts that divide us. Literary and Cultural Studies uses theory and practice to enrich our comprehension of, and our participation in, global culture.

Students work closely with interdisciplinary faculty who offer expertise in a broad spectrum of subjects. Students may take courses in global anthropology, film and video, comparative religion, or poetry writing, to name only a few.  Small classes led by dedicated faculty give students the chance for in-depth exploration of cultural products.  Our faculty members conduct research in a variety of global and historical contexts, contributing to the diversity and high quality of our courses.

More importantly, students in Literary and Cultural Studies enjoy the opportunity to learn in exciting new ways. Students may create performance art pieces, critique graphic novels, or plan exhibits. They may find themselves doing community service in the local Native American community or becoming immersed in Eastern philosophy. They might study the popular music of a people a continent away, or they might work with a group of community artists closer to home.

The Literary and Cultural Studies concentration focuses on the critical interpretation, social and historical context, and creative expression of music, literature, art, and culture of communities around the world.

Students design their Literary and Cultural Studies minor in accordance with their own interests in consultation with their program advisor.
