History of the Academic Success ProgramsSince 1993, the Academic Success Programs at Bryant University have been the primary source of academic support for the Bryant community. The Programs combine professional staff with peer tutors who serve both undergraduate and graduate students. The staff includes a network of part-time professionals who are specialists in writing, math, English as a second language, international students, academic skills, and learning disabilities. The Peer Tutors and Writing Consultants are students who have been recommended by the faculty because of their ability in certain disciplines and are then trained and certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. All of our staff provide individualized assistance that is cooperative, immediate, and non-threatening. Our peer-tutoring program first received Level I (Regular) certification from the College Reading and Learning Association in 1998, and Level II (Advanced) certification in 2001. Our program has been successfully re-certified every five years, with our most recent re-certification achieved in May of 2011. Dr. Laurie Hazard became the director of what was then The Learning Center in August of 1999. She changed the name to the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) in an effort to more closely align with the University’s mission: a student-centered learning community focused on student success and academic excellence. With the addition of the following services over the past decade, ACE is now considered just one of Bryant’s many Academic Success Programs:
