Bryant University. The Character of Success

Foundations For Learning: Support for First-Year Students

Bryant University is committed to the success of our students, especially our first-years who need not just an orientation to Bryant’s programs and services, but also to the life of a college student. Students are often surprised at the rigorous academics they encounter even in their first year, and the adjustment to college life in general is always a challenge. This is why Bryant offers the Foundations for Learning (FFL) college success course and accompanying workshops and academic support services to all incoming students, including transfers.

FFL invites Bryant students to join and participate in a student-centered learning community that will build their academic skills and connect them to an instructor whose focus is on their adjustment and success. The theme of FFL is CLAIMING YOUR EDUCATION. Learning involves making connections, taking calculated risks, and being open to change, and these concepts are discussed in the context of the first year student’s new environment. Throughout the course, students are challenged to be introspective and evaluate their current attitudes and habits, and to be open-minded about finding more efficient and effective ways to accomplish their individual academic goals. Major topics covered include time management, learning styles, procrastination, diversity, and health and wellness. FFL provides new students with an instructor who is focused on their successful intellectual, social, emotional and academic adjustment, and creating a safe environment for them in which to become active members of Bryant’s scholarly community.

Foundations for Learning is a course developed by and based on a textbook co-authored by Laurie Hazard, director of the Bryant Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and noted expert on helping students transition from high school to college. Dr. Hazard, the FFL Curriculum Coordinator, describes it as a “psychology of adjustment” course. Click here to learn more about Dr. Hazard.

This website has been developed to introduce you to the components of the Foundations for Learning course, as well as provide testimonials from instructors and students, tips and resources, and information for parents and faculty and staff.
