Bryant University. The Character of Success

Sophomore Year - Discover the World

As you will come to realize, sophomore year involves a great deal of decision-making on the part of the student. It is an important time to further establish your educational and career objectives. You may be asking yourself:

  • What do I want to do with my life?
  • Am I choosing the right major?
  • Does everyone have this all figured out but me?

The truth is the majority of sophomores are asking themselves the same questions. It is all a part of figuring out who you are and what you want to get out of your time at Bryant University.  Whether it is declaring your major, deciding if you want to study abroad, or figuring out what Bryant clubs to join, these decisions can be difficult to make on your own. There are many resources on campus (your Academic Advisor, the Amica Center, Faculty and Counseling Services) that can help you put together a plan that works for you.

Bryant University provides many resources to assist with your educational planning. The following suggestions may assist with your decision making process.

  • Academic Advising

Regular meetings with your academic advisor will enable you to carefully plan your studies. During these meetings you should be prepared to discuss your values, interests, aptitudes and goals. Your advisor will then be able to talk with you about the curricular and co-curricular options available to you. Prior to meeting with your academic advisor, it may be beneficial to explore some areas of study available to you.

Please call 232-6210 or go to the Undergraduate Advising Office (MRC201) to schedule an appointment.

  • Academic Department Chairs and Faculty

Make time this semester to meet with faculty in your area(s) of interest. Building an “out of classroom” relationship with faculty is extremely important. Faculty members are experts in their field and a good source of information regarding your educational pursuits and post-baccalaureate plans.

  • Amica Center for Career Education

The Amica Center for Career Education is committed to educating and empowering students in the career development and planning process in order to aid them in successfully managing their careers. The Center offers a number of career development services. Career planning is an essential piece of your education.

  • Center for Student Involvement (CSI)

Sometimes getting involved on campus can help you figure out where your interests lay. There are a number of student clubs and organizations that are available for you to join. Sophomore year is a great time to get involved in things such as Greek Life, Community Service, Intramural Sports or Academic Clubs. There is something out there for everybody, and if you do not find what you are looking for, you can even start your own group.

  • Study Abroad

If you think you’d like to study abroad and enhance the global education you’re already getting at Bryant, the sophomore year is the time to start seriously planning.  Bryant University offers programs in over 46 countries with opportunities to study in English or a modern language.  You can study abroad for a semester, academic year or the summer. Make an appointment to meet with a peer advisor in the Study Abroad office to begin exploring your options.

  • Sophomore International Experience (SIE)

The Sophomore International Experience is a special winter or summer session education abroad program led by Bryant faculty.  The program is designed exclusively for sophomores and is worth three-credits.  Previous locations have included China, Latin America (Costa Rica and Panama), Italy and Europe (London and Paris). Visit the Study Abroad office or website for more information.
