Library Catalog and the HELIN Consortium

The Douglas and Judith Krupp Library is a member of the HELIN Consortium (Higher Education Library Information Network).Through the HELIN system you can search the holdings of all member libraries (Community College of Rhode Island, Johnson & Wales University, Providence College, Rhode Island College, Roger Williams University, Salve Regina University, University of Rhode Island, and Wheaton College) or you can restrict your search to Bryant only by selecting "Bryant University" in the drop down menu rather than "View entire collection."  Consider Bryant a branch library of the HELIN system - if you see an item that you need simply hit the HELIN Request button  and proceed as directed.  If available, this item will be delivered to the Bryant library within a couple of days.  You may also check out books on site at other HELIN member libraries. The library is also a member of the Consortium of Rhode Island Academic and Research Libraries (CRIARL) which facilitates physical access to additional RI libraries such as RISD.

The InRhode Catalog

This catalog facilitates online borrowing between Brown University's "JOSIAH" library catalog and the HELIN member libraries' catalog "HELIN." Eligible borrowers (faculty, staff, and students) from the ten institutions in HELIN (including Brown) can request material (use "Request this item" option) by entering their name, barcode number (begins with 21999...) and a pickup location. The material available through Brown can circulate for 28 days with one 28 day renewal. Borrowers/users will receive three overdue notices spaced at seven-day intervals, with the third notice coming in the form of a bill. All Brown material will be billed at $100 per item, and this information will be provided in overdue notices. There is no on-site borrowing between Brown and HELIN libraries. Bryant students cannot physically access the Brown University Libraries without special permission from a Bryant reference librarian.

The Reference Department Always discuss your research needs with the Bryant Reference Department staff. Come into the library early in the semester and let us show you how to use all of our resources including electronic ones - many are also accessible from your home or your dorm. Ask about our library resource training sessions offered throughout the fall and spring semesters. Remember that we are here to help you with your research needs. The library also has an online reference/research chat room. This service is available from the reference page listed above.

Inter-Library Loan

In the event that a book or journal article is not available in the Bryant library or in the HELIN system or in the InRhode system, a student may request an interlibrary loan. This is done electronically via Bryant's interlibrary loan page. Please note if you see an item that you need and it is owned by another HELIN member library, you may simply hit the HELIN Request button and proceed as directed.

Your Bryant ID

Your new Bryant ID may be required for the following:
(old IDs  - pre Fall 2007 - will not be accepted):
  • Admittance to library
  • Admittance to and use of other HELIN member libraries
  • Annual Reports (library use only) and other Reference items
  • Checking out circulating materials at all HELIN member libraries
  • Copy Machines
  • Electronic reserve items
  • Inter-Library Loan
  • "Library use only" items and some workstations
  • Laptop loans (library use only)
  • Off Campus Access to Electronic Resources
  • Print reserve materials (library use only)
  • Study Rooms

If you lose or replace your ID, be sure to notify the Circulation Desk and reregister in person at the library Circulation Desk, as your replacement ID card will not automatically give you access to library services.

Circulating Materials

All circulating materials may be checked out upon presentation of your ID card. Circulating books can be checked out for 28 days. Circulating materials can be checked out by library staff or you may use the self-service checkout station adjacent to the Circulation Desk. Books can be renewed via the library catalog at http://library.uri.edu under "My Library Account"- as long as no one else is waiting to use them. If there is a book you want and someone has it out, you may place a hold: search for desired title in the catalog, click on the HELIN Request button and proceed as directed.  You can also use the HELIN Request button  to request items from the other HELIN member libraries.

Non-Circulating Materials

Certain items, such as reference books, reserve materials, journals, laptops and annual reports are library use only. An ID may be retained by library staff for certain materials when they are being used in-house.

Reserve Materials

Professors often keep required reading "on reserve." You may see who has what on reserve via the library catalog. Course Reserves under "INSTRUCTOR." Reserve books and materials are kept behind the Circulation Desk and may be checked out for a period of two hours by presenting your current Bryant ID. Hard copy reserve items are LIBRARY USE ONLY unless so specified by your professor. Many reserve readings are available in electronic format and are accessible from the dorms or from your home -- Look for "ECA" (electronic copy available).

Off Campus Access to Electronic Subscriptions

You can access many of the library's electronic subscriptions from anywhere on campus and also from your home (via your Internet service provider) by using the HELIN proxy server. Go to the electronic resources page and use the "off campus users" url where indicated. You will then be prompted for your name and the barcode number (begins with 21999...) on your ID.

Laptops for Loan within the Library

A limited number of laptops are available for loan at the Circulation Desk. You must have a Bryant ID and you must read and sign a Laptop Loan Agreement. These laptops are library use only with a three-hour loan period. All laptops are due back at the Circulation Desk one hour before closing. (Thank You!)

Laptop Users

There are 1,152 "wired" internet connections throughout the library and 1,536 wireless connections. All Bryant" laptops have wireless and wired features. If you are not using a "Bryant" laptop you must have a network interface card (NIC) in your laptop in order to connect to the wired network. You will need a wireless card (802.11b standard) to access the wireless network.(The entire campus is wireless as well!)

Entrance and Exit

The main entrance to the George E. Bello Center for Information and Technology is off the Grand Hall. An additional entrance to the building is via the Bello Center Café door. When there is a special function in the Grand Hall, library users may be asked to use the café entrance. The Grand Hall and café doors are the only doors to be used when entering and leaving the library. All other doors are emergency exits to be used only in the case of a fire or other emergency. When emergency exit doors are opened, an alarm will sound and a video camera will be activated.

Food and Beverages

Please refrain from bringing excessive food and beverages into the library. Water bottles OK. Library staff will be roaming the facility at intermittent intervals to monitor excessive food/beverage violations and will ask offenders to discard food/beverages or finish refreshments in the Bello Center Café or the Grand Hall area. Thank you for helping us keep our facilities beautiful, clean and inviting.

Quiet Please

All students have the right to quiet study. Please be considerate of the needs of others. The upper level where the circulating collection is housed is the "super quiet study zone." Library staff may ask you to be quiet or leave the building if you are disturbing other users.  If you need group meeting space for team projects and discussion, please use one of the study rooms on the upper level.

Theft and Vandalism

A zero tolerance policy exists for theft and vandalism. Video cameras and an electronic theft detection system are in operation. When you leave the library without properly checking out materials a gate alarm will sound.  There is a minimum automatic $50.00 fine if someone attempts to leave the library without properly checking out library materials. All books, bags and brief cases, etc. will be checked if the alarm system sounds as someone leaves the library. Certain textbooks from the bookstore may activate our anti-theft system - we will deactivate these titles for you. A $100.00 fine per item exists for the mutilation of library materials. Please respect our resources. They are here for everyone!

Fines

At present, there are no fines for overdue Bryant library books but you may be fined if you have overdue materials from HELIN member libraries.  You must pay any overdue fines directly to the lending HELIN library.  So please promptly return all items when they are due. All unreturned library items will be charged at $100 per item.
