What is Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary Loan, ILL, is the borrowing and lending of materials not owned by Bryant University or any HELIN libraries.
Eligibility
Interlibrary Loan is available to current Bryant faculty, staff, and students.
Limitations on Loans
Bryant adheres to the Interlibrary Loan Code for the United States, as well as all policies established by the lending institution. While we will try to obtain all requests, some materials are more difficult to obtain. These materials include:
-
Recently published books
-
Journal issues
-
Rare materials, esp. manuscripts
-
Genealogical material
-
Audio-Visual material
-
Dissertations
-
Reserve materials
Copyright Restrictions
The Copyright law of the United States, title 17 of the US Code, governs the making of reproductions of copyrighted materials. Under detailed provisions specified in the law, libraries and archives are allowed to supply a photocopy or reproduction of copyrighted materials.
If a patron requests a photocopy, electronic copy or other version of the reproduced material and uses this reproduction for purposes in excess of "Fair Use" [section 107], that patron may be legally responsible for infringement of copyright.
Limitations on Requests
There are no limits on the number of requests patrons may submit, however, if necessary, the interlibrary loan staff does reserve the right to limit the amount of requests that are processed each day.
Arrival of Loan(s)
Print Material requested through interlibrary loan can take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks to arrive. When your material arrives, you will be notified via e-mail. All print material will be available at the circulation desk for pick up.
Photocopy Arrival
Photocopies of an article may arrive earlier than print material and can be sent to you electronically or in paper format. In most cases an article can be transmitted to you electronically. In the event that an article is received in paper format, the interlibrary loan office will mail this hard copy to you. For these reasons, it is important to make sure your library account has a current campus and home address, as well as a valid e-mail address. The Access Services staff can assist you with updating your contact information at the Circulation desk. The Circulation Desk can be reached at (401) 232-6125, circdesk@bryant.edu, or simply stop by.
Loan Periods
The loan period for borrowed material is established by the lending institution. In most cases the lending library allows at least a 2 week loan period. To ensure continued borrowing, it is important that all materials are returned by their due date. Print material can be returned to the Library Circulation Desk. All photocopies sent to you do not need to be returned.
Renewal Requests
The lending institution establishes all conditions for loaned material. Renewal(s) of material is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of the lending library. If you need to renew material(s), you must contact the interlibrary loan office 1 week prior to the due date so that we can ask the lending institution for an extension on the loan period. The interlibrary loan office will contact you and inform you if an extension was given.
Use Restrictions
On occasion, the lending library places restrictions on loaned material. These restrictions can include prohibiting photocopying or use in the library only. If restrictions are placed, the interlibrary loan office will notify you of these.
Imposed Charges
The library attempts to provide this service free of cost to current Bryant faculty, staff, and students. However, in some cases, such as obtaining dissertations, there are charges associated with obtaining material. If we can not obtain this material for you because of cost, we will forward all necessary information to you so that you can acquire the material through other avenues.
Unfilled Requests
If your interlibrary loan request can not be filled we will let you know why it could not be secured.
Request Forms
Before submitting an interlibrary loan request, please be sure to check the HELIN catalog to see if the material is available through the HELIN consortium. If the material is available through one of our consortia libraries, place a HELIN request (Look for this button ) - not an interlibrary loan. When submitting an interlibrary loan request using one of the options below be sure to fill out the form completely. Thank you!
