Armand started his career as a watercolorist after having joined the Art Center in the early ’50s. Unlike some of his more ”naive” contemporaries, Armand was first and foremost an impressionist. He studied painting in Mexico between 1958 and 1960. He was then awarded a scholarship from the French government and lived in Paris until 1962, when he returned to Haiti and subsequently became Director of the Museum of Haitian Art at St. Pierre’s College in Port-au-Prince.
Armand has exhibited widely since 1957 in Mexico, the U.S., France, Spain, Jamaica, Martinique, Venezuela, Barbados, The Dominican Republic, Guadeloupe, and Israel.
He is known for the brilliance of his paintings of peasant life, Carnival themes, and pigeons.
