2009 STARTALK Teacher Program

Dates: June 29-July 2, July 6-10 (July 11 for Language Track) and July 13-18, 9:00a.m.-3:30p.m.
Location: Bryant University, Smithfield, Rhode Island

This three-week summer program provides vigorous professional development on Chinese language and culture for current and prospective K-12 teachers.The program offers two tracks:

Language Track for current and prospective Chinese language teachers from public, private and heritage schools. During the first week, participants will receive intensive training on language teaching methodology, strategies, standards, contents, and technology. During the second and third week, participants will be asked to teach practicing classes with middle and high school students in the morning (with about $500 stipend) and participate in cultural workshops and activities in the afternoon.

Culture Track for teachers of social studies, history, arts, literature, science and other subject areas who are interested in incorporating China contents into their curriculum. This track will focus on providing participants with knowledge and classroom activities about Chinese culture and history. At the same time, participants will spend about 30 hours during the program learning basic language skills, which will enable them to conduct basic daily conversations in Chinese upon completion of the program and develop a better understanding of Chinese culture through the language.

  • Field trip to the Peabody Essex Museum (Ying Yu Tang and China exhibits), Boston Chinatown, and Kam Man Market, Quincy, MA
  • Practice classes with middle and high school students
  • Teaching grants ($400 each) available for outstanding lesson plans and innovative classroom activities
  • Eligibility to participate in a two-week optional subsidized study trip to China (July 20 – August 1) at additional cost
  • On campus dorms available for free for participants living 30 miles away from Bryant (on first come first served basis)
  • Breakfast and lunch provided

Application

  • The program is full. Please consider participating next summer.
  • Previous experience of related teaching is not required.
  • There is no program fee. Participants only need to pay $150 for textbooks and a $200 deposit.
