HSK 汉语水平考试

  • What is HSK?

The Chinese Proficiency Test, also called Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK), is a national standardized test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers (including foreigners, overseas Chinese, and students of Chinese national minorities). HSK is a comprehensive test of various levels of Chinese learners and has been administered outside of China since 1991.Certificates of HSK are issued by the China National Committee to those who have achieved the required scores. For more information, please visit the web site of HSK Center at http://www.hsk.org.cn/english.

  • Why HSK?

The primary function or purpose of the HSK is to certify that non-native Chinese speakers are qualified to communicate in Chinese at the level required for business, school, and daily interactions. Proficiency in Chinese has increasingly become a qualification for those who want to study or work in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other locations or institutions where Chinese is either required or preferred. The HSK certificate provides official proof of sufficient Chinese language proficiency to apply for work in international companies and organizations or for admission into China's educational institutions at various levels. Another incentive for doing well is the reward of a scholarship to study in China for one month that is awarded to the top test scorers.

The function and purpose of the HSK Certificate is

1)  To certify that the holder has acquired the required Chinese proficiency to enter a college or university in China as an undergraduate or graduate student.
2)  To certify that the holder can be exempt from taking Chinese language courses depending on the level of certification.
3)  To serve as a basis for employers to evaluate the Chinese language proficiency of job applicants.

The HSK certificate is valid permanently, whereas the accompanying score report will only be valid for two years (starting from the test date) as the certification for foreign students to enter a college or university in China.

  • HSK Levels

HSK consists of the basic Chinese proficiency test (HSK Basic), the elementary to intermediate Chinese proficiency test (HSK Elementary to Intermediate) and the advanced Chinese proficiency test (HSK Advanced)

- HSK Advanced is appropriate for students with 3,000 or more hours of formal education in modern Chinese, have mastered a vocabulary of 5,000 or more Chinese characters at A, B, C, and D levels, and are able to understand corresponding Chinese grammar structures.
