Reporting a Crime

It is the shared responsibility of every community member to report crimes on campus.

What to do

• Call DPS immediately at 401-232-6001. The emergency number is 401-232-6911. They will need to know:
  • A good description of the culprit including height, weight, color of hair and eyes, clothes, and direction of travel.
  • Vehicle information including make and model of car, color, and license plate number
  • Number of persons involved
  • Date and time of the crime
  • Details about the crime
• Do not handle, touch, or remove evidence
• Remove yourself if the crime scene is unsafe
• Remain calm

A Department of Public Safety officer will interview you further to complete the investigation. Some crimes will require the presence and collaboration with the Smithfield Police Department. Any person who is a victim of a crime on campus may request that the Smithfield Police Department also file a report.

Crime Reports

Crime reports area available upon request and can be furnished by DPS in two business days. However, the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act may restrict certain information from being disclosed.
