Bryant University. The Character of Success

Hostile Intruder(s) on the Campus Grounds

When a hostile person(s) is actively causing deadly harm or the imminent threat of deadly harm on the University grounds, you should follow the following procedure:

  • Run away from the threat if you can, as fast as you can.
  • Do not run in a straight line.
  • Keep vehicles, bushes, trees or other things between you and the threat to block their view while you are running.
  • If you can get away from the immediate area of danger, summon help and warn others. Call Public Safety at 6-911.
  • If you decide to hide, consider whether the area in which you will be hiding will provide sufficient cover.
  • If you are unable to run or hide, you may choose to play dead if other victims are around you.
  • The last option if you are caught in an open area might be to fight back. This is dangerous, but depending on the situation, this could be your only alternative.
  • If you are caught by the intruder and are not going to fight back, follow their directions and don't look the intruder in the eyes.

Once the police arrive, obey all commands. This may involve your being handcuffed or made to put your hands in the air. This is done for safety reasons and, once circumstances are evaluated by the police, they will give you further directions to follow.
