DPS Frequently Asked Questions

Do Bryant public safety officers have the same authority as local or state police officers?
Bryant DPS officers are not sworn police officer and do not have arrest powers. However, they can detain, restrain, and apprehend anyone creating a disturbance or deny entry to the campus on their own discretion.

Does DPS provide lock-out service?
Yes, DPS officials can unlock a residence hall room or assist when keys are locked in a vehicle.

Are DPS officers available to help jump-start a car?
Yes, DPS is equipped with kits for jump-starting cars and are available to the campus community.

Does DPS provide late night escorts?
Yes. While Bryant is a safe and secure campus, DPS officers are available to escort members of the Bryant community to their cars or rooms.

Is smoking permitted on campus?
Smoking is prohibited in all university buildings and residence halls.

What is the drug and alcohol policy at Bryant?
Students who are under the age of 21 may not possess or drink alcoholic beverages. Because Residence Halls 14 & 15 house only students under the age of 21, no alcoholic beverages are permitted in Residence Halls 14 &15, or any other designated first-year area.

  • Students over the age of 21 may consume alcohol in the privacy of their residence hall rooms.
  • Students may consume alcohol in their suite lounges/common areas only when all residents of the suite are 21 or over.
  • Large quantities of alcohol, including kegs, beer balls, etc. are expressly prohibited.
  • Common containers (i.e. punch bowls) are not allowed.
  • Approved Social Gatherings in the residence halls must be alcohol-free.
  • The only entity permitted to sell alcohol on the Bryant Campus is Campus Dining
  • Consumption of alcohol outside is prohibited regardless of age except at University-sponsored events

The illegal sale, possession and/or use of controlled substances, e.g., marijuana, amphetamines, barbiturates, and other hallucinogens, is prohibited on the Bryant campus or at any University sponsored function. Students and student organization leaders are subject to University disciplinary action and referral to the local authorities regarding any violations of the university drug policy.

All members of the campus community are expected to comply with all federal, state and local laws, as well as all applicable policies contained in the student handbook, Residence Hall Occupancy and Board Agreement, and other documents when on the campus, or during University-related activities off campus.

Violations of these policies or laws by students may result in sanctions up to and including expulsion. Violation of these policies or laws by employees of the college may result in irrevocable termination of employment.

Are posters or flyers permitted to be hung on walls around campus?
No. All posters or flyers must be placed in a glass case or on the inside of a glass window.

What is Bryant's evacuation procedure in the event of an emergency?
DPS is committed to ensuring the rapid and safe evacuation of all campus buildings in the event of an emergency.

  • All staff, faculty and students should quickly exit the building when an evacuation announcement or fire alarm is activated.
  • Office doors should be closed and locked.
  • Exit using the nearest exit and move safely away from the building and await instructions.

Evacuation announcements may be in the form of a fire alarm, public address system, hand-held bullhorn, telephone announcement, or in person.

Public Safety will notify Smithfield Fire and/or Police Departments, who will control the scene for the duration of the alarm.

No one will be allowed to re-enter the building until notified by Public Safety.

What is the Bryant Evacuation Safety Team (BEST)?
The Bryant Evacuation Safety Team (BEST) is a group of volunteers made up of staff and faculty. They assist the efforts of the Department of Public Safety in evacuating the Unistructure during fire alarms.

BEST team members are trained and equipped by the Department of Public Safety Fire Marshal. Any faculty or staff member with an interest in participating as a BEST member should contact the Bryant University Fire Marshal at x6852 or by calling the business line of the Department of Public Safety, x6001.
