Bryant University. The Character of Success

Driver's License

The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (RI DMV) by law is required to record Social Security Numbers for all applicants for a RI Driver's License. If you do not have a valid Social Security Number, you must present a foreign passport and appropriate visa or documentation to validate the ineligibility for a Social Security Number (rejection letter.)

If you are 18 or older, and have never held a driver's license in Rhode Island, you must apply for an Instruction Permit.

You must bring the following documents (must be original) in person to a local RI DMV:

  1. Passport
  2. I-94 card
  3. I-20
  4. Bryant ID
  5. Proof of Residency (If you live on campus, bring a letter from Residence Life. If you live off campus, bring an apartment lease or utility bill in your name.)
  6. Verification letter of enrollment obtained by either the Office of Academic Records or the ICC
  7. Letter from Social Security Administration Office to validate that you are not eligible for SSN, if you don't have one.
