Instructions for Completing Form 8843

This information is for Bryant International Students on F-1 status only.

"Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with Medical Condition - for use by alien individual only."

  • Who must file Form 8843?

    All foreign students, teachers or trainees admitted to the United States on an F, J or M visa, even if he/she had no U.S. earned income for the previous tax year, must file Form 8843. If you earned income in the U.S., then the 8843 should be attached to your form 1040NR-EZ or 1040NR. Otherwise, it should be sent by itself.

    Exception: If you determine that you are a *"Resident Alien for Tax Purposes", it is not necessary to complete Form 8843.

    *"Resident Alien for Tax Purposes" - You will become a "Resident Alien for Tax Purposes" when you reside in the U.S. for more than 5 calendar years. Then you must report all interest, dividends, wages or other compensation for services. Refer to IRS Publication 519 U.S. Tax Guide for Aliens - page 5, and page 7- "Student" and page11 - "Resident Aliens."
  • INSTRUCTIONS
    • Fill in "First name", "Last name", and "Social Security number"
    • Fill in the "Address in country of residence" box with your home country address
    • Fill in the "Address in the United States" box with your address
    • Fill in Part I (Note: The answer to Part I-4b is the total number of days you were present in the U.S. in 2007.)
    • For F-1 student, fill out Part III. (Note: For question 10, put VP Academic Affairs, Bryant University)
    • Omit or skip Parts IV and V.
    • Sign and date the form at the bottom.
    • Make a photocopy of your completed Form 8843 to keep for your records.
    • Send completed form by the deadline to:

      Deadline: Tuesday, June 16, 2010 (If you are mailing form 8843 only.)
