For Tax Year 2007This information is designed for Bryant University international student in F-1 status. All students in F status are REQUIRED by law to file tax returns, even if you have earned no income in the United States. International students in F status for 5 years or less file tax forms as non-residents for tax purpose. If you did not earn any U.S. income during 2007 other than bank interest, then you need only file form 8843, Statement for Exempt Individuals and Individuals with a Medical Condition. The purpose of the 8843 is to verify that the student qualifies to exempt days of presence, and thus protects him/her from being taxed as a resident. Being taxed as a U.S. resident allows the IRS to tax your worldwide income. International students in F status for more than 5 years are generally eligible to file as residents for tax purposes, and must use different forms.Form 8843 is available online at www.irs.gov The deadline for filing your income tax returns is Tuesday, April 15, 2008, if you received wages or other income subject to tax withholding. Otherwise, if you had no income and are filing only form 8843, the deadline is Monday June 16, 2008. The Intercultural Center staff are neither qualified nor permitted to give individual tax advice. If you have income from unusual sources or higher than usual income, you should not rely only on this tax information. You should instead seek professional tax advice from a qualified accountant or attorney.
