Bryant University. The Character of Success

Damage Billing

At the end of each academic year, staff members from the Offices of Residence Life and Facilities inspect all living spaces to determine if there is any damage, beyond normal wear and tear, that was not present prior to your child living in the space. Standard housing fees incorporate the cost of repair and upkeep for normal wear and tear; damage billing charges apply to any damage that is deemed intentional or excessive.

What if my student is not responsible for the damages?
Students have the opportunity to appeal damages. Often this will require documentation from the party taking responsibility for the damage outlining that your child was not involved. Additionally, all students sign the room condition report at move-in and check-out during the academic year and have the opportunity to dispute any damages that are noted on the condition report. Please note, major building-wide damages are amortized across the entire residential population. Damage caused by guests is the responsibility of the hosting student, as per the University guest policy. More details about this process are available in the Student Handbook.

How can my student appeal a damage charge?
Directions for the appeals process are included in the itemized damage bill. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Office of Residence Life.

Who sets the prices?
Campus Management sets the prices for the cost of parts and labor every year. Residence Life does not set the prices for repairs, and cannot alter these charges. Appeals cannot be granted based solely on a disagreement over the cost of repairs.

What is my damage deposit for?
The $400 damage deposit is a one-time deposit paid upon entering housing. The deposit is held until your student leaves housing, either through withdrawing from campus residence or graduating from the University. At that time, the damage deposit is returned to departing students, less whatever damage fines are charged to their account. Damages totaling more than $400 will result in the student receiving a damage bill for those additional charges
