Bryant University. The Character of Success

International Service Learning Opportunity

For the past several years, the Gertrude Meth Hochberg Women's Center, in collaboration with the department of History and Social Science, has offered international service learning trips to the Dominican Republic.  Students enrolled in a Sociology course looking at the impact of globalization in the Dominican Republic are eligible to participate in the program and travel to a small fishing village in the southern part of the Dominican Republic. There the students are able to apply what they have learned in class and provide services to underserved populations.  Students live with local families, rely on public transportation, and truly experience a developing world country.

In this course, students will have the opportunity to study the impact of globalization on a nation in the so-called global south.  Using a sociological perspective, we will examine the history, culture, ecology and politics of the Dominican Republic while seeking to understand how best we can work with the people of selected villages and bateys to improve their standard of living.  In our course, we will plan our service-learning projects, execute these over spring break and share our findings with the larger community at the end of the semester.
