What to Expect in Your Master’s in Data Science Orientation Boot Camp

Mar 06, 2026, by Staff

In today’s economy, organizations in every sector are using vast amounts of data to inform their decision-making. This, in turn, is creating increased demand for data science professionals.

To effectively manage data for organizations, these professionals must have a range of technical skills, including proficiency with relevant programming languages and artificial intelligence (AI) tools. Many prospective technology professionals turn to data science degree programs to learn these skills.

To ensure the students entering Bryant University’s Master of Science in Data Science and AI program are comfortable with the data analysis technologies, statistical models, and other tools used to collect and draw meaning from data, the university hosts a data science orientation boot camp for them. Here’s what the students can expect from the experience.

What Does a Master’s in Data Science Orientation Boot Camp Entail?

A master’s in data science orientation boot camp helps prepare incoming students to succeed in a graduate-level data science program. The curriculum varies among schools, but students typically learn about the program’s expectations and practice using the tools they’ll use throughout their studies.

In a master’s in data science boot camp orientation, students often learn about:

  • Statistical models used in data analysis
  • Programming languages such as Python, SQL, and R
  • Tableau and other data visualization tools
  • Fundamentals of different types of AI and how they’re used in data science
  • How to communicate their insights to their peers and co-workers

Bryant University’s data science orientation is called MSDS 515: Preparing for MSDS and AI Success.

This one-credit, on-campus class typically takes place over two days and consists of two 12-hour sessions (8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.). The orientation program is offered every semester and is typically hosted by one of the program’s instructors, such as Professor Suhong Li, chair of the Information Systems and Analytics Department.

Students enrolled in one of Bryant’s online graduate degree programs, such as the Online MS in Applied AI program, have their own orientation called GRO 550: Online Strategies for Success. In this one-credit class, students meet Bryant’s online support team and learn strategies for success in online learning. Bryant also offers the IDEA program, a three-day boot camp that provides on-campus undergraduate freshmen with an introduction to concepts in innovation and design thinking.

How Does the Orientation Boot Camp Prepare Students for the Program?

Bryant University’s master’s orientation for data science students prepares them for the program through lectures, hands-on activities, and collaborative projects. In addition to helping the students learn or hone fundamental skills, it also introduces them to their peers, faculty members in the department, and the resources they’ll be using throughout their studies.

Among these resources is the Data Science Lab.

Housed in the newly constructed Business Leadership Entrepreneurship Center, the Data Science Lab is where students practice their skills using real-world data created by Bryant University’s industry partners. The lab is equipped with flexible seating for 36, whiteboards, touch screen monitors, and professional data analysis tools to facilitate collaborative, hands-on learning.

Insights From the Data Science Orientation Boot Camp Instructor

Professor Li answers a few questions about what students can expect during the data science boot camp:

1. How does the boot camp prepare students to do well in the MS in Data Science program?

The boot camp is designed to give students a strong foundation before the semester begins. It introduces them to the program expectations, the technical tools they will use, and the collaborative learning environment that defines Bryant’s data science curriculum. During the two-day experience, students meet faculty, staff, and fellow classmates while becoming familiar with key resources such as the Data Science Lab, AI Lab, computing platforms, and software environments used throughout the program.

In addition to logistical preparation, the boot camp provides refreshers in core technical areas such as Python programming, statistics, data management, and data visualization, helping ensure that students start the program with a shared baseline of skills. By combining technical preparation with guidance on academic expectations, career development, and teamwork, the boot camp helps students transition smoothly into the rigor and pace of graduate-level data science study.

2. What can students expect to do during the boot camp?

Students participate in a mix of interactive sessions, technical workshops, and networking opportunities designed to immerse them in the field of data science from day one. The boot camp begins with program orientation sessions where students meet graduate staff and faculty, learn about academic expectations, and explore elective pathways such as fintech, supply chain management, and healthcare informatics. They also hear from career advisors and industry professionals about career opportunities and how to effectively communicate insights through data analytics presentations.

A significant portion of the boot camp focuses on hands-on learning. Students review Python programming, statistics, and data visualization techniques and then apply these skills in an exploratory data project. Working in teams, they analyze data, develop insights, and present their findings at the end of the boot camp. This project-based experience gives students an early taste of the collaborative, applied work they will do throughout the program.

3. What do you hope that students will gain from the boot camp?

I hope students leave the boot camp feeling prepared and connected. Beyond refreshing their technical skills, it’s a chance for them to build relationships with classmates, faculty, and staff and to see the many career paths available in data science. My goal is for them to begin the program feeling excited, supported, and ready to learn.

What Does the Master’s in Data Science Curriculum Include?

Bryant University’s Master of Science in Data Science and AI program—which falls under the federal government’s STEM designation for certain science, technology, engineering, and math degree programs—prepares students to be data-driven leaders across every sector of the economy. Students can start in either the fall or spring. The program is made up of 11 classes and can be completed in 12 to 18 months.

Three classes are electives, meaning students can customize their degrees with their choice of classes on topics in fintech, international business, general management, healthcare, or global supply chain management. Seven of the eight core classes cover:

  • Probability and statistics
  • Data visualization and communication
  • AI and machine learning
  • AI-driven data management
  • Deep learning
  • Natural language processing
  • Large-scale analytics

For their eighth core class, students can choose to complete either a capstone project or a data science-focused business internship. Both options provide students with the opportunity to apply all of their new skills, including their communication, visualization, and presentation skills. Students who choose the internship option work at least 10 hours per week.

Prerequisites for the Master’s Orientation and the Data Science Program

While Bryant University’s data science orientation boot camp prepares students for success in the program, students must have taken and passed computer programming and statistics classes before enrolling. For students who haven’t completed one or both of these classes, Bryant University offers Programming Foundation for Data Analytics and Math and Statistics Foundation for Data Analytics. Both of these classes are available online and can be completed during a bridge semester before students start their studies.

Orientation is a great time for students to refresh their fundamental skills in these areas and learn how to apply them to their new field of study.

The degree program does not require students to have a specific type of bachelor’s degree or submit GMAT/GRE scores.

Prepare for Tomorrow’s Opportunities Today

Bryant University’s Master of Science in Data Science and AI program is designed with tomorrow's business leaders in mind. This means that while the curriculum is built around STEM skills, students also develop their critical thinking, collaboration, and strategic decision-making skills—essential capabilities in today’s competitive data-driven landscape.

To foster that kind of growth, this program features small class sizes and opportunities for students to develop strong working relationships with their peers and professors. And with over 20 electives to choose from, students can tailor their education to meet their own individual career goals.
