Chemistry

Support your major in the biological and biomedical sciences through a minor in chemistry. By learning the fundamentals of chemical composition and the basic properties of matter, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of diverse topics such as chemical biology, the synthesis of new forms of matter, the chemical phenomena that occur in humans, and the chemical interactions that make up the biosphere.

This minor is recommended for students who are looking to pursue careers in health professions, pharmaceuticals, and environmental sciences.

The chemistry minor includes three required courses:

• Introductory Chemistry I: Learn about the fundamental concepts of chemistry: atomic and electronic structure, chemical bonding, simple reactions in organic chemistry, and chemical equilibria.
   
• Introductory Chemistry II: Continue your studies in introductory chemistry by exploring chemical systems at equilibrium, spontaneous processes, rates of chemical reactions, electrochemistry, thermodynamics, and acid/base chemistry.

Select one of the following:

• Organic Chemistry I: Learn about the structure and chemistry of the major classes of organic compounds and the importance of organic chemistry in everyday life. Recommended for students looking for careers in environmental toxicology, pharmaceutical industries, waste management, biological sciences, and geochemistry.
   
• Biochemistry: Study the chemical processes that are continually occurring within living organisms, such as metabolism, generation of energy and the biosynthesis of major biomolecules, and photosynthesis. You’ll also examine the biochemical basis of disease and how biological systems deal with toxins.

Choose from one of three elective options to round out your minor and prepare for your future career:  

• Global Change and Geochemical Impact: Learn about global changes of atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere in the past and present and participate in hands-on laboratory exercise to reinforce lecture topics.
   
• Biomarkers and Isotope Signals: Gain a deeper understanding of state-of-the-art isotope technologies and their applications in the environmental sciences. You’ll explore how technical skills and knowledge about isotope chemistry are used in different environmental assessments.
   
• Research Directed Study in Science: Complete an extensive research project that aligns with your interests and refines your skills in experimental design, methodology, and analysis. You’ll be matched with a faculty member and complete a scientific paper and oral presentation with your research results.
